Championing positive learning environments, engagement and leadership development | Making student life projects and initiatives a reality @ Concordia University

Last week, Concordia's #Homeroom Program hosted, Barriers and Beyond: Perspectives on BIPOC Leadership. This included a panel of BIPOC student leaders talking about their journey at Concordia University. Here were some of my takeaways:BIPOC student leaders get involved in student life because they want to build representation and community. It's important for these students to be able to easily connect with other BIPOC students during their time at the university.Getting involved in student life is more likely to be linked with financial challenges, meaning BIPOC students are more likely to assume the role if it is a paid position or if they manage to obtain financial security in other ways, such as financial aid. Paid opportunities are important in creating more equitable opportunities for student leadership.Their mentors and the people who inspire them to get involved are often other BIPOC student leaders and friends/peers who demonstrate to them what is possible. Connection, community and representation are vital. As someone who works closely with student leaders at Concordia, I am often thinking about equity and the challenges BIPOC students face in contrast to their white peers. Student voices matter and provide important insight to those of us in engagement roles when envisioning future programming and service offerings.

"Effective change requires robust leadership and support across the organization. Yet, this is just the beginning. To navigate change successfully, a coalition of influential individuals is essential. They must draw power from diverse sources, work cohesively, maintain urgency, and underscore the need for change." - Falecia D. What happens when you build the capacity of school system and school leaders like successful executives? #UVAPLE has spent the last 20 years finding out and here are the results:🌟More than 800 schools across 32 states have been positively impacted🌟UVA PLE is the only K-12 leadership organization with journal level evidence of impact on substantially raising student achievementOne example is in #FultonCounty Georgia, where the number of F schools fell from 29 to 3 and the number of students moving on to associate and four-year colleges from high schools more than tripled. There have been incredible strides made in the last two decades, but there’s still more to be accomplished. Read the article below for a look at where PLE has been, and where it’s headed.

🚀 Exciting Showcase of Student Leadership at St. Charles County CAPS! 🌟At St. Charles County CAPS, we believe in empowering our students to take the lead in their education and personal development. Our recent Student-Led Parent-Teacher Conference was a remarkable demonstration of this philosophy. 🎓💪In this video, our talented students reflect on their Clifton Strengths themes, showcasing how they harness these unique talents in their daily classwork. 🌟 They proudly present evidence of the professional skills they've honed, demonstrating their commitment to growth. 📊💼But it doesn't stop there! Our students also delve into personal responsibility and work ethics, sharing their experiences and aspirations. 🤝📚Here are some key benefits of having students lead the parent-teacher conference:1️⃣ **Ownership**: Students take charge of their own learning journey, fostering a sense of responsibility.2️⃣ **Communication Skills**: They develop strong communication and presentation skills, vital for the professional world.3️⃣ **Reflection**: The process encourages deep reflection, aiding personal growth.4️⃣ **Goal Setting**: Setting goals for the semester helps them stay focused and motivated. This video is a testament to the remarkable outcomes when students are given the opportunity to lead. Let's celebrate their accomplishments and support their continued growth! 🎉👏#StudentLeadership #EducationMatters #FutureLeaders #StCharlesCAPS #ParentTeacherConference

Focus on the students. The students at your institution specifically and then deliver what they need, how they need it. Love the students you have. #highereducation #realcollege #povertyinformed #leadership #change

“Achieving diversity requires the active engagement and participation by all members of the institutional community. If diversity is a priority, then commitment should be evident in the institution’s formal statements of mission and its future academic and strategic plans. It is important that leadership be fully committed to the goals and that this commitment be demonstrated symbolically and substantively.”— Strategic Diversity Leadership: Activating Change and Transformation in Higher Education by Damon A. This conversation is not going to go away. And we educators – higher academics, and otherwise – need to seriously consider what value we bring to our community and in what ways that value integrates into their lived experience. If we cannot do that, we are not making an adequate case for the importance of education.#outdoors #nature #leadership
