TABLE OF CONTENTS

Mushrooms are my absolute favorite ingredient – they are super yummy, easy to cook and nutritious. They are also low carb and a great addition to meal planning when following a ketogenic diet.

We fry mushrooms in the skillet all the time. Garlic butter mushrooms make a wonderful side for venison deer steaks, a great topping for smoked burgers and the perfect compliment to steak skewers.

This mushroom recipe makes about four servings however the adults around here love mushrooms so much that there is usually non left for the kids meals lol. So if you want some for sharing, double the amount of mushrooms!

Mushroom varieties:

We love to use brown button mushrooms for this recipe however it works great with almost any mushroom.

  • Morels grow her locally and are a treat to cook with. Check out this morel sauce that I made after a foraging expedition!
  • Costco has started to carry premium mushrooms like oyster and shiitake. We purchase a pack of those any time that we see them.
  • White mushrooms work just as well as brown ones too.

Tips for cooking with cast iron:

  • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
  • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking as the surface of the iron will be hot.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
  • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.
