We all have favorite indulgent food that comes out at certain times of the year. For me? It’s green onion dip. It was one of the best things on the snack table at every holiday party or game day when I was growing up. The “special” green onion dip recipe we used? Let’s just say it started with a packet that had a long, unpronounceable ingredient list.

Making Green Onion Dip at Home

Does this taste exactly like the little green packet you get at the grocery store? I’m not gonna lie – it doesn’t. But it’s good. Good enough that my son commented on it being a really good dip — before he knew the backstory of my homemade version.

This recipe calls for simple ingredients; sour cream, but instead of the little packet, the flavoring for this homemade dip comes from green onions and spices. (You can make your own sour cream, too, if you have access to fresh milk!)

Ingredients

Sour cream The basis of this green onion dip, much like the store bought packet version, is sour cream. You could substitute plain Greek yogurt if you like, or use a dairy free yogurt if you have people with special diets to accommodate.

Green onions Slice fresh green onions thinly or chop even more finely if you don’t like any bits in the dip. If you’ve got dried green onions in the pantry, those will work, too. (Learn how to grow green onions at home for a ready supply!)

Seasonings The addition of seasonings like salt, parsley, black pepper, turmeric, and celery salt round out the flavors in this delicious homemade dip recipe!

This recipe is easy to mix up, and honestly, the ingredients are something I usually have on hand. Making green onion dip from scratch is another one of those easy conversions from store bought to homemade.

Serving

This is one of my favorite party dips and a good game day snack. Add it to your next appetizer menu, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve it with:

Chips: Plain potato chips are my favorite, but you could also serve it with tortilla chips, pita chips, or bagel chips.

Raw vegetables: Place the dip in a serving bowl and surround it with fresh bell peppers, celery sticks, and carrot sticks. You’ll get to enjoy this flavorful dip and get some servings for fresh veggies in, too.

Wraps: We know that this dip makes an amazing appetizer. But besides being a great green onion chip dip, it’s an excellent addition to your favorite sandwich wraps.

Storage

Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. It may separate in storage; give it a good stir before serving.

Notes
