Today is the 12th week of the 12 Weeks of Christmas Treats. Can you believe it? Christmas is just a little over two weeks away! Are you ready? I’m getting there! Either way, this week’s treat, Cathedral Window Candy, is so super easy to make that you can whip it up for any last minute occasion this holiday season. Put some slices in clear cellophane bag and tie with a pretty ribbon and you’ve got a quick and easy gift too!

I’ve had this easy cathedral window candy recipe in my own recipe box for several years now.

I’m not sure if it came from my mom or grandma, but either way, I remember it showing up on holiday treat plates here and there over the years. Made with only five ingredients, the sliced candy gets its name from the colored marshmallows that resemble the stained glass of a cathedral window. Can you imagine it?

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces colored mini-marshmallows
  • 1 cup walnuts chopped
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • In large bowl, combine marshmallows and nuts. Set aside.

  • In medium saucepan, melt butter over medium low heat. When almost melted, stir in chocolate chips and continue stirring until melted and combined with butter. Remove from heat and immediately add to marshmallow nut mixture. Stir to combine.

  • Set aside to cool slightly.

  • Meanwhile, on a sheet of aluminum foil about a foot long, evenly sprinkle ¼ cup of powdered sugar down center of foil lengthwise. Drop half of chocolate marshmallow mixture along length of powdered sugar on foil Roll into a log (does not need to be perfectly round). Sprinkle ¼ cup of powdered sugar along chocolate marshmallow mixture. Seal up foil and roll into a more cylindrical log. I used a toilet paper tube to help me make it a bit more uniform.

  • Repeat with remaining powdered sugar and chocolate marshmallow mixture.

  • Place logs in freezer or refrigerator (either will work) until hardened.

  • To serve, unwrap log from foil and slice into pieces about ¼-inch thick. Serve immediately on a platter. (it's ok if they do not stay cool as they will maintain their shape but if it's warm where you are, you don't want them sitting out too long).

Notes

These are easy to make ahead! Instead of refrigerating, label and free them up to three months. When ready to serve, remove from freezer and allow to thaw slightly on kitchen counter, about 30 minutes. Follow recipe instructions for slicing and serving.

Place a line of powdered sugar down the middle of the foil. Put half the mixture on sugar (it does not need to be exact). Wrap up the foil then roll into a tube. Using a paper towel tube cut open helps!

I grew up with my Grandmother making Cathedral Windows. I have been making them since I was little right beside her. I always thought she made this recipe up and when she passed, I was so upset I didn’t get the recipe from her. It is nice that you are sharing the recipe. I hope everyone who prepares it will find it as beautiful and easy as I do.
