We have face creams, body creams, and even creams made for our butts. But what about our boobs? Dermatologists, estheticians, and skin aficionados all say to “bring your skin care down,” meaning to apply it to your neck and below. However, our décolleté is a sensitive area all on its own, so wouldn’t it deserve to have its own focus? Furthermore, do we need specific creams for breasts?

In order to figure that out, we should first address how the skin in our chest area and breasts differs from the face. “Even though the skin on our face has the most daily exposures to sun and environmental factors, pollutants and other pathogens, our facial skin is packed with a series of more complex adnexal structures, oil and sweat glands, and hair follicles, allowing it to regenerate from environmental insults readily,” explains Dr. Ava Shamban, a board-certified dermatologist based in Beverly Hills. Shamban goes on to say that the skin on our neck and breasts are all different structurally in terms of dermal thickness, while the chest has thinner skin with fewer structures and oil or sweat glands.

Ingredients to look for in firming creams for breasts

When it comes to keeping your chest area and boobs moisturized, Shamban says it is very important, as the skin in the area is drier and produces less sebum. However, she says it’s not really necessary to use a different moisturizer than the one we use for our regular skincare routine.

“The good stuff is the good stuff,” she says, but adds, “concentration may vary for a face cream or serum from face to body to breast.” Keep in mind that “lipids, ceramides, and emollients that are super nourishing and will soften and smooth the area as well as those which protect transepidermal water loss.” Other skin-care ingredients that are good for the breast area include polyglutamic acid, coenzyme Q10, hyaluronic acid, and dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE), as well as B vitamins like niacinamide, and even retinoids, though, Shamban says the latter should be used not on breast tissue but on the upper décolleté, chest, and neck.

Shamban stresses the importance of sun protection, especially when it comes to the chest. “It’s key to use adequate amounts of sunscreen, and even clothing, to block damaging rays of the sun which cause damage, breakdown of collagen and elastin, pigmentation and dehydration so skin loses bounce, causes wrinkles and lines as well as creepiness,” she explains. Sun damage can result in dull and lackluster skin, so it’s crucial to balance the protection and avoidance with high quality emollients such as cleansers, hydrators, and/or humectants, she adds.

The best firming creams for breasts

If you’re concerned about chest wrinkles, one way to help prevent them is to be aware of your sleep positions. “This can be difficult—but train to sleep on your back,” advises Shamban. She also says that wearing a non-underwire style sleep bra, or athletic style top overnight, can be beneficial.

Another tip? “Use silicone sheeting nightly that will help keep the skin stay taut while your breasts are compressed against it,” she says. Wrinkles also bring the topic of breast firming creams to mind. While Shamban says they are fine to use, don’t expect your breasts to suddenly look perky or 20 years younger. “As far as the true promise to firm the area, I beg to differ,” she says. “That is something that is not really possible topically; it's more of a freshly hydrated plumping and a very, very temporary type of toning 'caffeine' effect.” (Still, not a bad thing to have on hand if you’re wearing a low cut dress for a night out.)

Keep scrolling for 10 of the best creams for breasts, including Shamban’s picks.
